Periodically I will be recapping the MLS overall instead of posting weekly. After 7 weeks of play, we have an idea of how this season is going to play out!

Eastern Conference

Toronto FC and Chicago Fire have struggled early. Toronto is in dead last in the East as of now after winning the entire league last year. TFC has an easy schedule upcoming where I think they will figure out how to get back to being dominant. In terms of Chicago, they took a bad loss to Minnesota, and they have not been able to find a groove this season. The Fire may not be able to find the MLS Playoffs this year if they continue playing like this.

NYCFC is on fire to start the season, but Atlanta United is not far behind in the race for first place in the East. The two teams played in Atlanta last Sunday, and NYCFC got a great result drawing Atlanta in the packed Mercedes Benz Stadium. Look for these two teams to stay on top of the East and even the entire league all season.

Orlando City SC, Columbus Crew, and NY Red Bulls are all solid contenders in the East, and I believe that the NE Revolution have been a fluke even though they are 3rd in the East right now.

My Eastern Conference Top 6 Prediction

  1. NYCFC
  2. Atlanta United
  3. Orlando City SC
  4. Toronto FC
  5. Columbus Crew
  6. NY Red Bulls

*NE Revolution, Chicago Fire, and Montreal Impact come up short*

Western Conference

Sporting KC and Vancouver Whitecaps have been fantastic in the West thus far and I believe it will continue. Kansas City’s attack is so quick and fluent and their defense backs that up, and Vancouver is getting great production out of striker Kei Kamara along with their own great defense.

LA is a fantastic soccer city at this point in time. The LA Galaxy landed European soccer legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic and since then they have been playing incredible soccer. The Galaxy trailed the new team in the MLS LAFC by 3 goals until Zlatan came into the game and scored a bullet goal from almost midfield and a header to take the lead in the 91st minute to win the game in comeback fashion. I have never seen anything like this in the MLS and it was just what the league needed. However, do not count out LAFC because this team has been fantastic in their own right. Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi are putting on a scoring clinic so far and the team is only getting better.

FC Dallas is the only other team in the West that has been relevant. Portland and Seattle are sitting at the bottom of the table after beginning the year playing very poor futbol. Colorado, Real Salt Lake, Minnesota, Houston, and San Jose are playing decent, but I do not see any of these teams becoming relevant in the future.

My Western Conference Top 6 Prediction

  1. Sporting KC
  2. LAFC
  3. Vancouver Whitecaps
  4. LA Galaxy
  5. FC Dallas
  6. ?
